Earlier this year, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors voted to begin issuing Lifetime Dog Licenses for individual dogs, beginning with the 2019 tags. These tags will be available beginning on November 1.
The due date for
obtaining a new dog license is January 31.
The new tags will be sold through the Treasurer’s Office as usual. Current pet owners who have purchased licenses should have received a bill from the Treasurer in late October. Owners who do not receive bills should contact the
Treasurer’s Office before the January 31 due date.
The Lifetime Dog License eliminates the need for
citizens to re-register the same dog every year. Once purchased, the Lifetime Dog License
remains valid so long as the dog’s rabies vaccination is current, and the dog
and owner live in Goochland County. Accordingly, the purchase of a Lifetime Dog License
will result in a cost and time savings to most citizens because they will no
longer have to purchase a new dog license every year.
Cost of the tags will be $10.00. The Lifetime Dog License is only valid for the dog for whom it was issued. The Lifetime Dog Licenses apply only to single dogs. There is no reduced cost for neutered or spayed animals. There is no change in multi-dog licensing. Multi-dog licenses of 20 for $25.00 and 50 for $50.00 must still be purchased annually.
If a Lifetime Dog License becomes invalid, because a
dog’s rabies vaccination expires, owners must provide a current rabies
certificate to the Treasurer’s Office to re-validate the Lifetime Dog License. Veterinarians notify local Treasurers when the
vaccinations have been administered and the license remains valid. Failure to maintain a current rabies
vaccination for your dog could result in a fine in addition to the expiration
of the Lifetime Dog License.
Licenses may not be transferred. Moving to another jurisdiction or the premature death of a dog will not be grounds for a refund. The Department of Animal Protection is responsible for
enforcing the licensing.
