[ARCHIVED] Goochland County to Remember September 11, 2001

Goochland County - September 11th Remembrance Ceremony - 9-11-17 DSC_0093c

On Tuesday, September 11th, it will have been seventeen years since a coordinated terrorist attack was carried out on American soil. September 11, 2001 is a day that if you are over 21-years old you will never forget. It was a day that we experienced the harsh reality of the world and the fact that evil things can happen in our homeland. We also experienced how we, as Americans, can come together in a spirit of unity and rise up to the challenge.

Once again, on September 11, 2018, the Goochland County community will gather together to remember the loss and honor the sacrifice that we all witnessed in New York City, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and Arlington, Virginia.

At 9:45 AM members of the first responder community (Goochland County Sheriff's Office and Goochland County Fire-Rescue) will gather at Goochland County Fire Rescue Company 5 station (2710 Fairground Rd) to specifically honor their brothers and sisters who gave their lives in the line of duty. The names of the fallen First Responders will be read, and one fallen hero will be highlighted with their biography. A large American Flag will fly triumphantly over the service and the attendees. The public is invited to attend and join your public safety community in a show of unity.

At 7PM the entire community is again invited to gather at Goochland County Fire-Rescue Company 1 station (180 River Rd, Manakin Sabot, VA 23103) for a Community Focused Remembrance Service. Members of the Goochland County Public Schools Marine JROTC will present our nations colors and several speakers will share inspirational messages. The service will be held outside (weather permitting) at the site of our county memorial to that fateful day. The memorial contains two large pieces of steel from the North Tower of the World Trade Center which are woven into the memorial site. The public is encouraged to attend.
