Goochland County - Deputy Administrator Derek Stamey Receives Outstanding Achievement Award

Deputy County Administrator Derek Stamey was recently awarded the Marcia Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award by the Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA).

Each year VLGMA presents this award to a deputy or assistant manager or administrator who is a member of VLGMA and who has demonstrated outstanding performance, particularly with a special project or during a period of unique conditions and circumstances. Mr. Stamey was nominated by County Administrator John Budesky for a number of accomplishments, including his leadership role in renovating and restoring the Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex.

“There is no more deserving recipient of the Mashaw Award than Derek,” said Budesky, “his expertise, ability to engage, initiative and willingness to take on large challenges is a testament to his ability to lead and inspire his team effectively. Derek has been a true champion when it comes to major county projects. He has been truly instrumental in the Central High School Cultural and Educational Complex, new Animal Protection and Adoption Center, and the development of Goochland’s 25-year Capital Improvement Plan, the first of its kind in the commonwealth.”

Since October 2009, Mr. Stamey has served the county, first as the County’s Director of Parks, Recreation, & Facilities Management overseeing the divisions of Parks and Recreation, Goochland Extension Office, and Facilities Management. In December 2016, Mr. Stamey became Deputy County Administrator for Operations overseeing Animal Protection, General Services, Parks & Recreation, Goochland Extension Office, Major Capital Construction, and more.

Deputy County Administrator Derek Stamey Receives Outstanding Achievement Award

The Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization composed primarily of city, town, and county managers and key members of their management teams. Membership in the organization is offered on an individual basis. The primary goal of the association is to strengthen the quality of local government through professional management. The association seeks to promote professional management in a variety of ways including training, networking, and resource sharing.

This award is named in memory of Marcia Mashaw who served as assistant town manager of Blacksburg in the 1980s. Mashaw was an active member of VLGMA and served on the executive committee at the time of her death in 1986. The membership created this award in her name to honor her memory and accomplishments.
