Goochland County Appoints Interim County Administrator

On February 4, 2025, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Manuel “Manny” Alvarez, Jr. as Goochland’s Interim County Administrator.  Mr. Alvarez previously served in the role of interim county administrator in 2021.  Read more.

Central Convenience Center Begins Process to Add New Open Top Container

The Central Convenience Center will begin construction on an area to accommodate a new open top container in February. During the construction period, traffic around the Central Convenience Center may be reconfigured to ensure safety. In some instances, service at the center may need to be temporarily suspended. Read more.

President's Day Closures

County Office Closures for Presidents' Day

Goochland County Government Office and Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, February 17th in observance of Presidents' Day. Parks & Recreation facilities will open at 4:30 PM for evening programs. 

Goochland's Convenience Centers will be OPEN normal hours. 

Throughout the month of February, we will be highlighting historically significant Black facilities and influential residents who have shaped Goochland's history.
African American Schools in Goochland 1910 -1938

Did you know that between 1910 and 1938 there were 23 schools constructed to serve the Black community in Goochland? Ten of those being Rosenwald schools. This map, on display in the Central High Museum, shows the location, year built, and grades served for each of those schools.
Dr. Arthur Gilbert Blakey and Jessica Cobb Blakey

Dr. Arthur Gilbert Blakey was born on March 8, 1888, in Barboursville, VA. He graduated from Virginia State College and later earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College. Starting in 1918, he dedicated 45 years to practicing medicine across Goochland, Fluvanna, and nearby counties.

Known for his selflessness, Dr. Blakey often treated patients pro bono, with some offering produce in gratitude. His unwavering service and compassion left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Dr. Blakey passed away in 1963, but his legacy endures. He was both a role model and mentor to many, including the late Dr. James Harold Bowles, Sr.
