How can I determine if there is Floodplain or Wetlands on my property?
Please visit the County’s mapping website. There is a floodplain and wetland layer located under the Environmental section. This will give you a general idea of whether there may be floodplain or wetlands on your property. Generally, if you have any low areas in which water flows not related to a storm event, you should check with the Corps of Engineers. If you see any indication that there is floodplain or wetlands on your property, you will need to contact the Army Corps of Engineers at (757) 201-7652 and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality at (804) 698-4000 for an official determination. Please note it is unlawful to disturb any areas in the floodplain or the wetlands without first obtaining any necessary permits from the appropriate authorities.
