[ARCHIVED] Goochland’s VA250 Committee Marks a Successful First Year

GVA250 Marks a Successful First Year

Goochland County’s VA250 Committee, part of the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), is celebrating a successful first year marked by two events and a marker unveiling.

Chaired by Manny Alvarez, the Goochland VA250 Committee consists of local leaders, historians, educators, and community representatives. The committee plans events and initiatives to engage the community in honoring Goochland's historical contributions.

The Committee’s first event was held on Saturday, September 14. The Run to the Revolution 5K welcomed 75 runners to the historic grounds of Elk Hill. Attendees ran a carefully mapped out course that explored various sites along the campus. Following the race, attendees enjoyed self-guided tours of the historic house, built in 1835.

On November 2, Goochland County honored the 200th anniversary of General Lafayette's visit during his American farewell tour. The event, held at the Historic Tuckahoe Plantation, commemorated Lafayette's journey to Monticello. The ceremony featured a presentation of colors by the Goochland High School Marine Jr. ROTC, remarks from Brian Burns of Alliance Française on Lafayette's sacrifices, and a heartfelt performance by actor Charles Wissinger portraying Lafayette. Attendees enjoyed period-inspired delicacies prepared by Goochland High School Culinary Arts students.

Following the event at Historic Tuckahoe, the group traveled to the Goochland Courthouse for a marker unveiling at the former site of Anderson’s Tavern, now the Goochland Business Center, where Lafayette stayed during his journey.

“We had a great kickoff year.”, said Manny Alvarez. “Thank you to all who participated and the businesses and individuals who helped us with funding. We are planning several events this year and of course, a grand event on July 4th, 2026.”

The Goochland VA250 Committee has plans for more events in 2025 and invites the community to follow them on facebook at GVA 250th, or visit their website https://www.exploregoochland.com/187/VA-250-American-Revolution.
