On the evening of Tuesday, August 29th, Goochland County Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services’ Water Rescue Team conducted a joint training with the Fluvanna Water Rescue Team, Powhatan Water Rescue Team, Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad Water Rescue team members, and Virginia State Police’s Med-Flight 1. Over 50 public safety providers gathered for the training hosted by Goochland County Fire-Rescue at the Fife Company 4 Fire Station in western Goochland.
This joint training opportunity allowed the regional public safety partners to learn about Med-Flight’s program capabilities as related to water and technical rescue, as well as training on landing zones and scene medevac missions. Helicopters are an important tool for water rescue teams, at times they can help first responders locate missing people on the river or even rescue them from a place where a boat cannot reach. A highlight of the training was Virginia State Police’s new Bell 412 Med-Flight Helicopter which flew in and provided multiple demonstrations.
Overall, it was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen regional public safety partnerships while learning about a vital state water rescue asset. Thank you to the Virginia State Police and Med-Flight 1 for their continued partnership and training support.
This also provides the perfect opportunity to remind the Goochland community to practice river safety when enjoying the James River. Watch for hazards, such as underwater obstacles, rocks or other debris that has washed into the river. Always have a buddy with you when you are on or in the water and always supervise children when they are in or around water.
