Goochland County - WIC Benefits through Medicaid Expansion

Millions of Americans already receive health coverage through Medicaid, including pregnant women, children, seniors, and individuals with low income or a disability.  With this decision for Medicaid expansion, more Virginians became eligible for low or no cost health insurance.  Enrollment began on November 1, and those who qualify received access to healthcare starting January 1, 2019.

Those who now meet the requirements for Medicaid include:

  • A childless adult between the ages of 19-64 with annual income at or below $16,754
  • Parent of family of three with annual income at or below $28,677
  • Person with a disability with annual income at or below $ 16,754

To determine eligibility go to coverva.org.  The screening tool on this website takes the applicant through a series of six short questions about income and family size.

To apply for coverage choose one of the following options:

Any Virginian who thinks they may be eligible is encouraged to apply.

And if you have Medicaid or SNAP (formerly called Food Stamps) and you are pregnant, recently had a baby, or have children under the age of 5, you are automatically eligible for the Virginia WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) Program.  If you have FAMIS insurance, you may qualify.  WIC provides:

  • Healthy Foods
  • Nutrition Education &
  • Breastfeeding Support

It is also possible to qualify for WIC based solely on income.  For example, a family of 4 can make up to $46,435 per year and qualify for WIC.  Income maximums for other family sizes are available at http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/chickahominy/wic/.  WIC currently has appointments available at Goochland Health Department two Thursdays per month.  We also have appointments at Hanover Health Department in Ashland on various other days of the week and two Wednesdays per month at the Department of Social Services in Mechanicsville.  Please give them a call if you would like to schedule an appointment for WIC services, at (804) 365-4335.
