The County’s General Services Department has spent the better part of 6 months working to identify and create the new signs. The private street signs will be a change from the standardized green sign - white lettering combination that many residents are used to seeing on County roads. The private road signs will keep the white lettering but will switch to a brown background. The Federal Highway Administration allows for street signs to be green, brown, blue, or white (with black letters). Brown was chosen because it is the most cost effective to produce.

All public roads will remain green with white lettering. In all, 789 signs will need to be replaced, a process that may take up to 18 to 24 months to complete.
Signs will be replaced in quadrants, beginning in the western end of Goochland and moving eastward until all 789 signs are completed.
The effort to identify and ultimately to replace the private street signs is being conducted in part to aid Goochland’s public safety officials as they maneuver the County’s roads in response to situations requiring their attention. Many citizens have their mailing addresses associated with private roads. Marking our private roads with new signs can help narrow down addresses and reduce responses times during an emergency. In addition, mailboxes are not always directly in front of the home. Goochland’s public safety officials would like to remind everyone to please post your address clearly and prominently at the end of your driveway and on your home.
