[ARCHIVED] Goochland County Receives Virginia Recycling Association Award

{vra award 11-1-16}

Receiving this recognition spotlights the creative ways the County, through Dwayne Jones, Convenience Center Manager, and Leigh Dunn, Curbside Recycling and Goochland Anti-Litter & Recycling Council (GARC) Coordinator, promotes and provides recycling opportunities for citizens, employees, and students. Recycling opportunities including curbside (eastern Goochland subdivisions), drop-off, plastic-bag, and electronics recycling. In addition, recycling is promoted in Goochland County Public Schools and County administrative buildings resulting in the diversion of paper, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles from the waste stream.

The final key effort the County was recognized for is the annual document shredding and tire amnesty events, which have become popular for citizens. Through the tire amnesty event the County has recovered and recycled truckloads of tires that may have otherwise littered the community. The County and GARC recently celebrated "America Recycles Day" on Saturday, November 19th  by holding the annual tire amnesty and document shredding event.  It was a tremendous success for our community, thanks in part to the volunteers and citizens that participated.

The County is extremely proud to be recognized for our recycling efforts and is always evaluating opportunities to improve and expand services for our citizens.  If individuals are interested in becoming a member of GARC, volunteering at clean ups or recycling events, or just want to share an idea concerning litter or recycling, please contact Leigh Dunn at 804-556-5850 or via email

Other important advancements in recycling include the recent announcement by the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA), the County’s regional recycling partner, that additional plastics, caps, and cartons have been added to the curbside & drop-off recycling program. With the advancement of technology and new markets – additional plastic bottles and containers types identified with the #1 through #7 are now recyclable. This includes plastic lids and caps. Waxy coated food and beverage cartons are also recyclable; simply rinse out bottles and cartons and place the plastic cap back on to be recycled.  No plastic bags, Styrofoam, food contaminated pizza boxes are accepted.  When in doubt, visit CVWMA's website at
