Goochland County has been made aware that Virginia Department of Transportation’s contractor is finishing work on the Fairground Road Roundabout and are preparing to open it soon. This includes removing some of the detour signage, please continue to follow the detours until the roundabout is officially opened.
In preparation for the Fairground Road Roundabout’s Opening, the County is sharing the following 5 Things to Know When Driving Around a Roundabout:
- Traffic flows counterclockwise around a center island
- Roundabouts’ curved shape necessitates slower speeds
- Yield to vehicles in roundabouts before entering
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Stay in your lane while in a roundabout
We appreciate the continued patience and understanding of the community as we work with VDOT and the contractor to further this project and bring it to full completion.
This expected early completion and opening is more than 2 months ahead of the original schedule! This was made possible through the collective efforts of County and Virginia Department of Transportation staff to have Phases 3 and 4 work take place simultaneously. The County would like to thank our partners at VDOT for working with us to keep the project ahead of schedule.
As part of Phase 3 and 4, Fairground Road (Route 632) was closed west of the Courthouse Commons Shopping Center starting on Monday, April 17th and has had active construction during this time. Drivers are encouraged to continue following posted detours as work continues.
Phase 3 and 4 Detour Specifics:
- Sandy Hook Road (Route 522) will remain open throughout the remainder of the project. Fairground Road (Route 632) will be closed west of the Courthouse Commons Shopping Center.
- Sandy Hook Road will be under flagging operations at times during construction.
- Dickinson Road (Route 396) will be used as a detour for passenger vehicles.
- Maidens Road (Route 634) and Bulldog Way (Route 724) will be used as a detour for truck traffic.
- VDOT has completed work on Dickinson Road ahead of the planned detour.

- From Fairground Road (Route 632) West at Dickinson Road (Route 396): Take Fairground Road (Route 632) west, turn left onto Dickinson Road (Route 396), take Dickinson Road (Route 396) to River Road West (Route 6), turn right onto River Road West (Route 6), take River Road West (Route 6) to Sandy Hook Road (Rt. 522), turn right onto Sandy Hook Road (Route 522).
- From Sandy Hook Road (Route 522) south at Fairground Road (Route 632): Take Sandy Hook Road (Route 522) south to River Road West (Route 6), turn left onto River Road West (Route 6), take River Road West (Route 6) to Dickinson Road (Route 396), turn left onto Dickinson Road (Route 396), take Dickinson Road (Route 396) to Fairground Road (Route 632), turn right onto Fairground Road (Route 632).
Truck Detours
- From Fairground Road (Route 632) West at Maidens Road (Route 634): Turn left onto Maidens Road (Route 634), take Maidens Road (Route 634) south to River Road West (Route 6), turn right onto River Road West (Route 6), take River Road West (Route 6) north to Bulldog Way (Route 724), turn right onto Bulldog Way (Route 724), take Bulldog Way (Route 724) east to Sandy Hook Road (Route 522), turn left onto Sandy Hook Road (Route 522).
- From Sandy Hook Road (Route 522) South at Bulldog Way (Route 724): Turn right onto Bulldog Way (Route 724), take Bulldog Way (Route 724) west to River Road West (Route 6), turn left onto River Road West (Route 6), take River Road West (Route 6) south to Maidens Road (Route 634), turn left onto Maidens Road (Route 634), take Maidens Road (Route 634) north to Fairground Road (Route 632), turn right onto Fairground Road (Route 632).
Motorists traveling through the area are advised to use caution, and plan for increased traffic and possible delays along their route. The community is urged to use caution and pay attention to revised markings and signage when approaching the intersection during construction.
Drivers are encouraged to stay informed of road closures and impacts along the Fairground Road (Route 632) and Sandy Hook Road (Route 522) intersection. Once completed, the project will include a single-lane roundabout with additional turn lanes and sidewalks to improve user safety. Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) expected completion date for the project is Fall of 2023.
